The clients wanted a front garden that was low maintenance but
visually striking and in keeping with the exterior of the Victorian
house. The existing deciduous Gleditsia had to be incorporated
into the design, and garden was to be a 'hint' of what is to follow
once you get inside; huge open plan spaces with glass walls and
high ceilings.
The solution was to go for a simple contemporary formal design
using traditional materials such as slate and gravel, but with
a modern twist; the 'Glue and Glitter' resin bonded gravel gives
the decorative natural finish of loose gravel without the maintenance
problems, and the grey slate has been butt-jointed to create a
crisp modern path to the front door. The planting is evergreen
box topiary in contrasting shapes of squares and balls and the
holly standards repeat the shapes and provide height, colour and
seasonal interest. The fences are open slatted Iroko panels to
allow the light through, and the front wall is built with traditional
reclaimed London bricks, and complimentary stone capping.
