Mid-Century Garden
Fieldend, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham
Constructed April 2025 By All Things Green
A Mid-Century modern SPAN house on an estate in Twickenham designed and built in 19060’s by the architect Eric Lyons. The modernist movement is characterised by functional design, clean lines, minimalist materials, and a connection with nature which is why the estate is set in 5 acres of landscaped gardens to the front and small private gardens to the rear.
The brief was to create a low maintenance hard landscaped garden to fit within this aesthetic and retain the original 60’s paving, brick walls and later climbing frame. The intention was to create different zones within the garden to enjoy the sun at different times throughout the day, and to give purpose to the climbing frame which was felt added height and structure and may be used by grandchildren in the future.
There was plenty of tall and mature planting in the garden but it lacked groundcover and evergreen structure, both of which have been added. The small lawn was removed and replaced with clay pavers, which will mellow and blend with the existing bricks over the years, and a hanging seat creates a focal point. Small evergreen grasses such as Luzula and Sesleria have been added for texture and movement along with evergreen flowering perennials such as Euphorbia, Libertia and Sisyrinchium to add colour and seasonal interest.
